When we talk about the history of humans, there are a lot of grey areas and a lot of fuzzy lines. matched

When did we even become humans? matched

When did Africans leave the continent and start to populate the rest of the world? matched

How did they move from one continent to another? matched

And what were they doing along the way? matched

In Ireland, our history is just as fuzzy. matched

We talk a lot about the mystical ancient East, but our history, as far as anyone can tell, reached 10,000 years back and no more. matched

But this summer, I was invited to join an international team of scientists to explore a cave in the west of Ireland that could possibly rewrite our entire timeline on this island. matched

Now if you listen to this show, you'll know that I've always had a bit of a skeptical eye when it comes to paleoanthropology and archaeology. matched

This has been cultivated over time, a position hewn from conversations with researchers that seem to be almost constantly fighting with each other. matched

But that's understandable. matched

It's important to get this stuff right. matched

But when you're dealing with fragments of skulls or almost unrecognizable marks on bone, it's easy to get carried away. matched

There are plenty of stories on record of claims being made, disputed, and fought over, and Ireland is not alone in this. matched

So I say this from the very beginning. matched

This is a story that will leave questions unanswered. matched
