The journey of what happens when that's not enough?
What's up when you were finalist for a Rhodes Scholarship, you're a Truman Scholar, you had a 4.0 at Brown, your first book came out when you were 23 years old, a month after you graduated, and you still feel like that little kid hiding in the bathroom.
What do you do now?
Well, now you go back to the source of that, you know, the short bus for me, metaphorically.
You listen to people who have navigated life lived differently and try to learn from them.
And then normal sucks is the reckoning with what was underneath all those stories, which is the notion of the good human, the right human is normal.
And if you're not, you're deficient in less than as a human being.
And so to go to your question about parenting, I still have pieces of that old story of success is X.
And, you know, I got a 16-year-old junior in high school now.
And, you know, we're in the midst of that social pressure, which still exists.
And it's not just social.
It's also internal expectations about what constitutes a meaningful life.
and what paths are on the path and what aren't on the path.
And I wrestle with, struggle with today.
Have we nurtured a broad enough definition of a meaningful life?
Have I practiced what I've preached to others as it pertains to pointing forward to adulthood for my kids?
And I don't know the answer to that.
