You know, I was the square peg that did not fit the round hole of uh American education.
And I got the message that my differences were deficiencies.
And that message uh took took its toll.
And uh when I kind of came out uh the other end uh doing okay, you know, I graduated from from Brown University.
I wrote my first book as an undergraduate of Brown and uh I co-founded uh eye to eye a mentoring and advocacy program at Brown as well.
When I came out the other end, you know, I I felt it was my obligation to make sure uh uh other folks who
who learn differently uh don't get the short end of that stick and to build a more inclusive world.
Well, uh of course.
And and first I think it's it's important to to be transparent about what brought me to writing to begin with, 'cause you know, I I spell at a third grade level.
you know, I was uh consistently told that that I was a bad writer.
You know, I couldn't handwriting sucked, you know, spelling sucked, uh, reading sucked, you know, all of it.
And so uh what brought me to sort of telling my story and and hopefully in in doing that, uh telling our story as a community, a little part of it, w was really a teacher I had.
And and I celebrate this teacher everywhere because he's a role model
model for me as a as a human and I hope he's role model for others.
And his name is Mr.
R.
He was a third grade teacher.
And you know, he was so committed to the idea that everybody has strengths and talents.
And he would ask every kid, you know, hey, what are you good at?
You know.
