As a culture, have developed our systems, our process and procedures in those systems have developed around this idea that there's a normal human.
And subsequently, if if you're not a normal human, uh something's wrong with you.
And that message that different is deficient, that something's wrong with you if you deviate from the mythical middle of the bell curve, that wounds people.
Deep.
It wounded me deeply, and it was uh a form of trauma that required uh intentional uh acts of healing.
And so uh the book about that journey of of healing, of of thriving, uh not despite my differences, but because of my differences.
And while the book uh tackles, I think, a lot of high themes, you know, the role of normal in culture, where it comes from, its historical origin in medical thinking, et cetera, et cetera, uh, it's written as a as a letter to my my kids.
I got three boys.
Uh and the impetus to that was
One day one of my kids saying, Hey, hey dad, am I normal?
And I'm like, oh, here we go again, you know, like right back down the rabbit hole, this word again.
And so I wanted to share, uh, frankly, in a very personal way with my kids, first of all, you know, how one resists normal and builds a life around it, despite it, through it.
Uh and then subsequently, obviously, I think that's our challenge as a community when we've been told that we're not normal.
How do we reclaim a sense of self?
How do we critique that tyrannical notion of normal?
And how do we, how do we live and thrive different?
Well look, language matters.
Um, because it informs the way we think.
Um, it's the mental models that we use to make sense of the world.
And and then perhaps more importantly, uh not only does it inform the way we think, but it informs the way we act.
