got through uh my my adolescence because I had uh an outlet uh of of athletics, in in my case soccer.
And, you know, that really kind of ke kept me going and and frankly kept me alive.
And I I don't mean that in any sort of trite sense, in very literal sense.
And it kept me with a sort of North Star for for my future.
You know, I wanted to be a a division one soccer player.
That was my goal, etcetera.
And and I achieved that goal and and ultimately transferred to Brown.
And and that was a long process of transformation.
So what were the steps along that I think folks can take from it?
Well well, there's a few.
Um, you know, number one is that challenging of the deficit model that was embodied by Mr.
R in my life.
I mean, that was a a seminal moment.
A seed was planted.
You know, young folks with with neurodiversities hear all about what's wrong with them.
They don't hear very much about what is right with them.
And that has to be challenged.
You know, we have to flip that deficit script and be deeply committed in our educational institutions and then in our parenting to be finding the good all the time.
And and then making time for that good to build on it.
A good friend of mine, advocate named named Rich Weinfeld, who used to run exceptional education for Baltimore County.
