You know, I remember when I was first diagnosed.
And and me and my mom were called into the to the school psychologist's office to get the results back, right?
And me and my mom walked into that office and it was obvious the moment we walked in that everybody thought we were getting terrible, tragic news, right?
You know, the lights were turned down low, there was soft jazz music playing in the background.
There was a box of tissues on the table, right?
Like it was this was they were giving us the the diagnosis of all diagnoses and it was a tragedy.
And I felt that, you know, I heard that in the deficit language.
And I walked out of that room uh and I turned to my mom and I said, Hey Ma, am I normal?
And my mom looks right at me and she goes, Jonathan, normal sucks.
And uh she was right, you know, that was the foundation, hence the title of the book, the foundation of ultimately thriving as somebody with differences.
Uh what my mom said to me and how she acted that rhetoric and lived that every day in my life.
You know, my mom uh
You know, her her her her parents, my grandparents, Irish immigrants, work work coal mines in Montana, moved to San Francisco to re clean rich folks' homes.
And uh my mom struggled in school.
She did not get the support she needed.
She spells at a third grade level like I do to this day.
Uh she got the message that she was sort of stupid, crazy, lazy.
And um that stayed with her.
And so it took
uh unbelievable courage that that I don't think I completely understand.
