Hundreds of people have died in a cross-border conflict between Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Now China, which is mediating the dispute, says the two sides are ready to explore a comprehensive solution.

Pakistan says it's in open war with its neighbour, accusing Kabul of harbouring terrorists, something Afghanistan's Taliban rulers deny.

The two countries have agreed not to escalate tensions, although Afghanistan says it's been shelled across its border even while talks took place.

Tens of thousands have been displaced by fighting, with 100,000 Afghans completely cut off.

Iranian media reports only two oil tankers were allowed through the waterway in the hours since the ceasefire was announced.
