A court in the Netherlands has ruled that the Dutch government must do more to protect people from the consequences of climate change.

This is the first legal test of landmark European and World Court rulings on global warming.

The case was brought by eight residents of Bonaire, a small island in the southern Caribbean that's part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

Judges say the government must now set binding greenhouse gas emissions targets in order to reach net zero by 2050.

Environmental group Greenpeace supported the action.
