I think I have found my first genuine mystery of the Trump years, or at least the second Trump years, which is why didn't he simply walk away after signing the Memorandum of Understanding?

To do so, it would have been irresponsible to cede control of the Strait of Hormuz to Iran and to allow Iran to become the dominant power in at least that half of the Gulf region and to force everybody else to normalize relationships with them.

And Trump does irresponsible things all the time.
And he could have just paused a beat and moved on and done Cuba, right?

Yesterday, we also got word that Trump has reached a deal with the Saudis, which is going to enable them to enriching their own uranium for commercial purposes only, David, not for the purposes of becoming a nuclear state.
I have long believed that the Trump doctrine, to the extent that it exists in any way, leads inexorably to nuclear proliferation.
Because everybody and their brother is going to realize that without America...
sort of policing the world order, the only way to guarantee your integrity is to be a nuclear power.
