The American people have kind of gone rotten.

Right.

And once the American people have gone rotten, you can't expect the government to be any better than the public demands it to be.

So I would agree in part and disagree in part.

I agree that people are always the same, right?

I mean, the human condition is the same in all times and all places.

But societies change very meaningfully, right?

There is a difference between Japanese society in 1920 and Japanese society in 1980s.

The mores and the conventions and the urges and wants and things they will tolerate and things they will, as a society, form around change in very meaningful ways.

And I think it is possible that America's society has changed in really meaningful ways.

But I would fully agree with you also that this is an elite problem as well.

This is an and both, not an either or, I think.
