It is the Odyssey.
It begins with these first couple of books, which are about Telemachus going in search of his father.
But then suddenly the action cuts and we go into Odysseus' story and we meet all the characters who Odysseus has encountered.
And Telemachus is sort of forgotten about.
And I think that's why Joyce is honing in on the Odyssey.
He's going to use the Odyssey to let go of Stephen Dedalus.
Ultimately, Stephen Dedalus is going to be very present at the start of Ulysses.
But as the book goes on, Dedalus evaporates into the wider consciousness of Dublin itself with all the many characters and the cast of that book who are going to appear.
I think this is possibly the most overrated book we've done so far in The Secret Life of Books, Sophie.
Oh, I agree.
I found it really, really joyless to read in a way that I rarely find with the books we do.
And full of this kind of self-regard and misogyny.
And yeah, there we are.
We've said it.
That's a very good question.

20 years ago, I would have thought Ulysses, but I've come to seriously revise that view, partly from having read The Odyssey and reread Ulysses.
