But during the war and the aftermath of the war, you realize it's an act of nostalgia of trying to recreate something that has been destroyed forever and changed forever.
And he might approve of many of the changes that have happened, but there's also a lot that he laments.
And he's trying to capture something, the life of a city over one day in all its extremity and diversity that will never ever be the same again.
So I think the war is completely transforming what this book is and giving it a heightened importance and power and poetry.
And I think it's, you know, in huge part responsible to the things that we admire about this, Sophie.
And I find Ulysses most exciting at the moments where you really feel Joyce trying to invent language or literary form from ground up.
There's a sense of absolute vitality and liberation at those moments.
So I'll give a couple of examples just to keep us connected back to the text.
Here is a scene uh I love it.
It's it's it's a short scene in which Bloom is having a bath and he's looking at his penis, right?
That's what's happening.
And this sort of stuff does not get written about in literature.
And Joyce is saying, Well, why doesn't it get written about?
Why shouldn't this stuff be written about?
You know, what's so great about all the literary forms and use of language beforehand if it led us into mass slaughter?
We we need to start from scratch.
Scratch.
So this is Joyce saying, I'm going to try and forget everything and describe what a man looking at his penis in the bath might be.
Yeah.
Enjoy a bath now, clean trough of water, cool enamel, the gentle tepid stream.
