And on that, let's get to his master stroke because the final episode of the book, episode eighteen, is called Penelope.
And Penelope is Odysseus' wife.
In this, it becomes Leopold Bloom's wife, Molly Bloom.
Now, one of the things that's complete genius of making the entire last episode this this sort of singular first person narration from Molly Bloom half asleep in bed.
Is that it gives a voice to the Penelope character, which the Odyssey doesn't have.
The Odyssey begins in book one with Telemachus telling his mother Penelope to shut up and go upstairs.
He says that's where women belong.
I'm going to sort things out.
And at the end of it, Odysseus gets back at the end of the Odyssey and comes in and lays waste to the suitors who have been after his wife, and then says the same thing.
He tells that too.
You know, sh shut up and go to your room and I'm gonna go and tidy things up.
So Penelope is frequently denied a voice in the Odyssey.
And what James Joyce does in Ulysses is he hands over the entire final section of the book to his Penelope stand in, who is Molly Bloom.
And what is complete genius is that you might be expecting at this point to get this very educated, sensitive woman talking
In a rather superior way about her life.
And Molly Bloom is basically just thinks about sex most of the time with people who aren't her husband.
And I'm gonna read you a bit of it.
