It's all lasers and no Lenin in here. A pulsing melting pot of the best and brightest in the 15 republics that made up the Soviet Union. We had dancers encouraging and calling on the people of Pripyat to dance. The 400 strong crowd dressed in knock-off jeans, big hair and t-shirts tighter than an industrial vice. Excitement, energy and hairspray filled the room.

I was the pilot, the chief guide. I was constantly talking to the audience. It wasn't just about putting the music on and that's it. This is the disco of the 80s, when the DJ is the organizer of the dancers. I was the person who would say how, what and where we are going.

This was no ordinary disco, for Pripyja was no ordinary place. It was an atomgrad, a nuclear city in northern Ukraine built especially for the workers on the marvel of Soviet engineering next to it.

Koska se oli Ukraina's youngest city, we got a really great team to work in the disco. And actually, to be honest, it was a party for me. We were doing it because we loved it.

The Soviets' relationship with alcohol was changing. The party realizing the much-loved vodka was becoming a problem, and it started cracking down on supplies.

But that didn't stop a dad with a newborn from getting some much needed relaxant.

We were sitting there for a long time and we were getting drunk. Then the doorbell rang. Sir, he can't believe who's standing there. It's the girl with the red belt. He's seen her before at the club. They've never actually met. But he's noticed she's had a glow up. They opened the door and Irina was standing there. I had my seaside tan.

It took me 40 years to realize that actually it was a set up. Our moms planned it to introduce us to each other.

Operation Babushka worked! But where do you go after courgettes? Well, luckily the city had plenty of options for a young couple. We thought we could go to the disco, but where else can we go in our small town? So he invited me to go to the swimming pool.
