My mother's boss called and said that they had a lot of courgettes from their summer house. And if we want some, we can go over and get some. My mother said, good timing, we need courgettes. So I got dressed, went around there, the door opened, and I saw this guy sitting in the kitchen.
It was Serhi. He'd been invited round by his friend, who had just had a baby and was freaking out. He told me, Serhi, please come over. I'm tired of being surrounded by women. I need to talk to a man. And we were drinking samohon. It's a very strong drink.

Chapter 5: How did the Chernobyl disaster impact the wedding celebrations?

But that didn't stop a dad with a newborn from getting some much needed relaxant.
We were sitting there for a long time and we were getting drunk. Then the doorbell rang. Sir, he can't believe who's standing there. It's the girl with the red belt. He's seen her before at the club. They've never actually met. But he's noticed she's had a glow up. They opened the door and Irina was standing there. I had my seaside tan.
And that was it for me. They invited me to join them, but I didn't want to. I didn't drink some mohon. I was young. I just finished school. But they insisted. I told them, my mother sent me to pick up some kozets. But they said they didn't have any. I was so confused.

Chapter 8: What is the lasting legacy of love and resilience in the story of Serhiy and Iryna?
While appropriate might have been utopian, the USSR was far from it. The Communist Party dictated an incredible amount about what people could do, say or think. In March 1985 Mikhail Gorbachev had come to power promising change, a policy of glasnost, more openness and perestroika and modernization of the country.

The new year arrives. It's 1986. In Moscow, communist party bosses declare it the year of sobriety across the Soviet Union. The supply of alcohol was now massively restricted. Who says bureaucrats don't know how to have fun? The grapes in the vineyards were cut and it was very difficult to find alcohol.
