The new year arrives. It's 1986. In Moscow, communist party bosses declare it the year of sobriety across the Soviet Union. The supply of alcohol was now massively restricted. Who says bureaucrats don't know how to have fun? The grapes in the vineyards were cut and it was very difficult to find alcohol.

But there are more important things to worry about. Arenas finally answered Serhi's big question. She said yes. They set a date for the wedding. Saturday, 26th of April, 1986. Party bosses get wind of the wedding and tell Serhi he needs to set an example with the city's first alcohol-free wedding.

I woke up very early at 6 am, excited. I took some bed linen and went to the new apartment where we were going to sleep after the wedding. And what struck me was that the weather was very sunny. It was very warm. Everything was blooming. And then I went outside and saw this picture. At the exit from our yard there were soldiers and police. And they were everywhere, outside everybody's homes. And the soldiers were wearing gas masks.
