As we were setting up our Sri space in the exhibit hall in a convention center, reports began flowing in about events unfolding in Japan.
The Tohoku earthquake and tsunami.
It seemed almost too horrible to believe.
When all was said and done, Tohoku was the most powerful earthquake ever recorded in Japan and the fourth most powerful in the world since modern record keeping in nineteen hundred.
According to some estimates, twenty thousand people were killed or missing, and close to five hundred thousand people were forced to evacuate.
In addition, a nucle nuclear power plant meltdown triggered a nuclear emergency.
The economic loss from this event was estimated at three hundred and sixty billion with a B.
easily making it the most costly natural hazard the world had ever experienced.
Now we used what was we had available to us back in twenty eleven, real-time feeds through the QuakeFeed app on the phone, which still exists and is still excellent, and mapping the USGS real-time spreadsheets of earthquake epicenters, magnitudes, and depths.

The measure tools in ArcGIS Online can be used to teach and learn about it about scale and distances, for example, between the plate boundary and the coast and the area of the city of Rikuzen Takata that was one of the most devastated communities.
