Sama Bajau live close to the shore by erecting houses on stilts, and they travel by using leipa, handmade boats.
We were hosted by a local family and paid them for food and accommodation.
The people were very hospitable and friendly.
The free diving ability of the Bajo, or it could be Bajo, is legendary, with some sources stating that they can hold their breath for up to five minutes while hunting fish, spearfishing.
Interesting.
It was amazing to go spearfishing with them using traditional homemade equipment, end quote.

Note the map scale when you do so and maybe change the base map to a satellite image.
You'll notice that the island is only 500 feet in length, a little over three football fields long.
Zoom out and note the larger island of Sulawesi to the west of Pulau Papan and the island of Borneo to the west of Sulawesi.
That is our place this week, Pulau Papan, Indonesia, and the seafaring people that live there and have lived there for centuries.
Our thought leader for this episode is John Harrison.
John Harrison, 1693 to 1776,
was an English carpenter and clockmaker who invented the marine chronometer, a long-sought-after device for solving the problem of how to calculate longitude while at sea.
Calculating latitude was fairly easy by measuring the angle of the sun and stars via astrolabes, sextants, and other devices.
which admittedly were cumbersome and clunky given the rocking motion of ships and other variables, but was doable, in quotes, doable.
Difficult, but doable.
Calculating longitude was much more difficult.
Harrison's solution revolutionized navigation and greatly increased the safety of long-distance sea travel.
