One of the best books on geography that I've ever read.
And it was very popular too, unlike a lot of books on geography technology.
This one was actually really popular as well as being quite excellent.
So that is our thought leader for this episode, and that is John Harrison, English clockmaker, solving the longitude problem.

For its first 50 years, the GIS mapping community was largely focused on mapping exterior spaces and places, watersheds, census tracts, transportation lines, supply chains, and other aspects of the outdoor, natural, and human-built world.
At the same time, the building information modeling, or mapping, BIM, and computer-aided drafting and design, or CAD, communities had been mapping interior spaces for many years, creating 2D and 3D diagrams and drawings used in architecture, engineering, and construction, the so-called AEC trades.
And these two communities did not work together to a great extent until about 2018, when it began to be recognized that two things.
Number one, buildings don't exist in a vacuum.
They impact the spaces around them and are in turn impacted by their surrounding neighborhoods.
And, number two, if we are to build a resilience model for, let's say, a college campus, a medical center, a city center, to plan for a possible security incident, tornado or flood, or some other event, and to have a common mapping platform where the interior and exteriors of those places could be interoperable in one computer system, then...
The BIM, CAD, and GIS communities need to be working together.
With that recognition was the need to develop tools that each community could use.
Now, I encourage you to look at some 3D scenes, for example, one that I have blogged about in the past, to appreciate these new capabilities.
When you do so, ask yourself a few questions.
Where will the shadows fall, and where is the view obstructed, given different development scenarios for a piece of property?
