But Scottie missed the cut this week at the Scottish Open.
Certainly a surprise, but not a complete shock if you've been watching Scottie Scheffler throughout the year.
And I don't want to overstate his struggles because, again, he is clearly the best player in the world.
But...
If you've been watching week in and week out, Scottie has been just a little bit off here and there.
He's hitting uncharacteristically wide shots.
I think his drive has a lot more curve in it.
He's hitting these big wipey fades more often than he was in the past.
He used to never miss right off of the tee.
We're kind of seeing a two-way miss.
Again, still playing great, great golf.
But I mean, last year he was in the top 10 in all four majors and he won two of them.
This year could be a year spent in his prime where he does not win a major championship.
And I think that's got to be the biggest story coming into this open that's player related.
Oh, look, if you're trying to make the argument Scottie is not a step down, you're just not paying attention.
And...
To your point, Andy, if he doesn't win this one, which he very well could, he should be the favorite.
It's possible he goes the whole year where his only win is the American Express, and that was at the very beginning of the year.
The first start of the year, and that's not the strongest field.
to win and just for a little more reference like last year he was the co-leader in two of the majors after 54 holes and won two of them this year the closest he's been after three rounds of a major is within four he's just a little step off and people have been saying like well well
