It made me think about my own mum and how she'd feel if I disappeared.

So I started digging.

I'm an investigative journalist who spent almost a decade working in Syria.

I've also worked to help evacuate people from conflict zones when they're in danger.

And I have some experience looking for missing people.

So I opened my contact book.

And spoke to everyone from senior officials to people gathering information on the ground.

She's a Jordanian investigative journalist.

We're good friends and we've worked together for a long time.

And she just happens to have spent years researching the Syrian prison system.

So I've asked for her help in looking into Austin's case.

Together, we've come to a small village in southern England to meet a Syrian contact.
