There are several men.

Some with faces covered, all armed.

Every glance from them feels like a calculation.

They approach our minivan.

As they shine their lights on my face.

The gaze softens.

The men are part of the group that has just toppled Syrian President Assad.

An hour later we're in Damascus.

Despite the chaos and the lack of an actual government,

hotels are thankfully still operating.

I unzip my bag and feel for a folder, triple checking.

It's still hidden where I left it.

So much of my reporting has been about national security and intelligence.

And before it came to Damascus, a source of mine with intimate knowledge of Austin's case reached out.

I'd spent months gaining their trust.
