I mean, like the level of detail about these individuals is astonishing.
I cannot even imagine how the author was able to stitch together all this information, especially, you know,
I think in a lot of ways, a lot of Syrian families are still really scarred from the secret police.
You know, neighbors were snitching on each other, nowhere felt safe.
And so for an outsider, even with the best fixers in the world, to be able to get this level of intimate detail, I think is just an incredible feat.

When a lot of people think about these long, bloody, seemingly endless and internecine civil conflicts in faraway places, they're like, oh, that's not my problem.
What do I care?
But this is the kind of book that shows you how human this is.
And it's the value of having really intensely character-driven narratives.
And I, when it became clear to me just how entwined all these seemingly discreet individuals, how entwined their lives are, I actually had to, like, pause the audiobook and take a minute.
