2017 is when that book came out, but I feel like it has just never left our consciousness.
That book followed
a family of ethnic Koreans, first in Japanese occupied Korea in the early 20th century, then in Japan itself.
It's a really twisty history and and people just love it.
People love the way that Min Jin Lee writes and this backstory and her immersive tendencies.
And it's just, yeah, I've I've never seen a book take off quite like that.
So this is similar.
Um, first of all, it might be helpful to know what a hagwan is.
A hagwan is, I think, a South Korean phenomenon.
They're these sort of private
cram schools for students to take like supplementary classes in English and Korean and math to prepare for South Korea's
college admissions exam, which are they sound totally onerous.
And it's become
A sort of
runaway phenomenon.

So this follows one family, the Co.
family, and they go from Seoul to Sydney to Southern California.
I don't really want to spoil much more, but I I think that all the hallmarks of Pachenko, the sort of sweeping multigenerational, the sort of
Strands that pick up the family betrayal, the love, the the existential questions, like how can we retain our humanity in the face of history?
