My name is Juan Cal.
I am a Maya Erche young person.
I come from the village of San Marcos, one of the Maya Erche communities in southern Belize.
And to be Maya means is to be well.
To be Maya means is that we have our lands.
We have...
resources, we have beautiful landscapes and that where we come from is rich beyond the wealth that a society interprets.
A lot of times society interprets wealth
As in cash, we interpret wealth as in having resources, having life in abundance.
And in our language, we are still happy.
We are together, we are collectively here to celebrate each other.
Being Maya in the 21st century...
I am proud to say I can still speak my language.
I am able to understand that before me, my ancestors were people who had an ingenuity that science and archaeologists are still unearthing and are still trying to decipher.
So we are here to celebrate that, that our ancestors were once in their grandeur and that as we continue to be Maya in the 21st century, that nothing should ever stop us.
And for as long as we can remember that, we will prevail.
We will be Maya.
We will continue to be Maya in the next decade.
And that is the message today.
