Um, interestingly, even though people realize that it was a particularly neglected thing they set out to do, I think they heralded a uh like a new age of people building awesome AI safety driven startups that are really mission driven first and foremost.
With the general research being done across the board, people
realize that we should do other neglected approaches.
That's good for your career or you're more likely to get funding to do something where you can make more progress.
There is a lot of low hanging fruit there.
People just think that we should do something.
I think that made more sense in a world where
You have
unlimited timelines and it's more of a greenfield like the way EA used to be.
But the reality is when there is a possibility of short timelines, then you just sort of have to do whatever it takes to make the thing
work.
The survey results indicating that people don't think we're on track to solve alignment in time, the space of current approaches does not cover all plausible research agendas needed to solve alignment seem to indicate that we should spend way more attention and resources pursuing neglected approaches to alignment, in addition to any other practical steps that make alignment research more likely to solve alignment uh before we get HEI.
It's great to see that people are realizing this more and more, using this term more and more.
Most alignment researchers don't actually view AI safety and capabilities advancement as mutually exclusive, but they assume that other people will, which is unfortunate.
There's often a disconnect between what individuals think and what what they think everyone else in the community thinks.
When we first started to get into alignment a year and a half ago, we encountered this pushback about advancing capabilities.
People were often scared to take any action or even think about doing some.
something ambitious to solve the alignment problem for fear of advancing capabilities generally.
One thing that most people realize, at least on some unconscious level today, is that capabilities are moving forward super fast, regardless of what people who care about AI safety are doing.
I would prefer to live in a world in which we get BCI right before we invent all this stuff and where we understand what consciousness is before we invent all this stuff.
