The All Else Equal podcast is a joint production of Stanford University's Graduate School of Business and the Lauder Institute at the University of Pennsylvania.
It is produced by UniversityFM.
Welcome to the Lauder Institute at the University of Pennsylvania.
I'm Jules Van Binsbergen, Director of the Institute and a finance professor at the Wharton School.
Called what everyone knows that everyone knows.
So I think, Jonathan, the first thing we should do is define what common knowledge is.
And I think that Stephen does a very nice job in the book explaining that what in English we generally mean with common knowledge is actually not what in say game theory or psychology people refer to as common knowledge.
In other words, if there is a piece of information that every
Body is aware of, then in common English you might say that's common knowledge, but that's not what's meant.
What's meant with common knowledge is not just that everybody has a piece of information, but also that everybody knows, that everybody knows that they have that piece of information.
And you can even iterate that further, that everybody knows, that everybody knows, that everybody knows, that everybody knows, and you can iterate that into information.
Give one very famous anecdote and story about what common knowledge represents, which of course is the emperor not wearing any clothes.
