So famous was he and so great was his reputation as an animal artist that he was commissioned for these sculptures.
And he had to go away and teach himself to sculpt in order to produce them.
Well, that's a very good question.
The estimate that we've put on it is three to four million pounds, which I think reflects
the rarity and importance and sort of epic scale of this painting.
But it will be very interesting to see what it ends up making on Wednesday come the auction.
We're hoping that it will generate a lot of interest.
It's already starting to generate quite a bit of a buzz, certainly, and we've had lots of people inquiring about it.
And it's a wonderful picture.
And I encourage anybody who is in London or can come to London to come and see it because it really is
quite an epic thing to behold in the flesh.
And we're hoping that that interest will translate into strong bidding activity and it will be very exciting to see where it ends up.
So you can see it at Sotheby's Bond Street Galleries right through until Wednesday afternoon, just ahead of the sale.
And it's a really rare and exciting opportunity to come and see a picture that hasn't been seen in public since the last major Lancer exhibition in Edinburgh in the early 2000s.
and may well disappear back into a private collection for some years to come.
So this is an exciting opportunity to come and see one of his great late masterpieces.
