So they've got about 90 minutes.
And the plan for those 90 minutes has three stages.
First, they have to get themselves into uniforms that they've stolen off the guards.
Second, they have to hijack the kitchen truck or the lorry when it turns up.
And then finally, they have to drive this lorry out through the front gate like it's a normal Sunday afternoon.
The uniforms come first.
About 13 escapees are going to have to walk out visibly as prison officers, which means that the uniforms actually have to fit them, because a warder in an obviously wrong-sized outfit is exactly the kind of thing that a colleague at the gate might notice.
Everyone put on their outfit in the right size.
And now they just needed the lorry.
But, of course, the lorry was running late.
Big Brendan McFarlane.
Keep in mind, he's one of the escape leaders.
He walks down the yard with a broom, just like he does every day.
And he gets to the airlock, and he has a friendly chat with the officer on duty by first name.
And then he gets waved in on the pretext of sweeping around the security hut, and he takes over the airlock.
The two visible warders at the gate are now IRA men installing uniforms.
And from outside, it's all working.
Nothing looks wrong.
They're just still waiting for the lorry.
The plan was getting thrown into jeopardy because they're running so late.
