Um, I had a conversation with Ryan today before the before the interview to to check in with him about, okay, you know, what would you like me to share?
And he said, Mom, you should really share anything you need to share to help the community.
Um, at the same time, we both right now are on the same page about the fact that the actual label and diagnosis that he was given when he was younger isn't something that we're openly sharing about.
But all the other details about it we are
And what has also shifted for Ryan recently is about a month or two ago, we actually shared the actual the diagnosis with him that he was given when he was a child.
And that was something again, you know, he knew all of the details about it, but he didn't know the actual diagnosis.
When I told him about it, he said, Oh, it's like Jeopardy.
I knew the answer, but I didn't know the question.
It's a great Ryan, Ryan kind of analogy.
So true.
So what happened there is, you know, for the longest time I did not want the label to define his identity, but I also knew that at some point we would share it with him.
And a couple months, it was actually before his bar mitzvah, which ended up being a very transformative rite of passage experience on many levels for him.
He had come home from school.
school one day upset about something that happened at school with a friend and, you know, was was really upset with himself because he just didn't understand why this friend was upset by something he had done.
And then he didn't understand why that was so hard for him because I was able to point out to him, Oh, I can see how he felt this way and I just could tell in the moment I just instinctively knew it was the right time to tell him and to let him know that, you know, this is why some of these things are harder for him.
And I had listened to your episode with Asher and you and I have had this conversation and so it was also in the back of my mind.
I think Ryan even had heard an episode with Asher maybe around the growth mindset.
And so I also framed it in a very positive way too, about, you know, some of the things that are gifts for him because of his life experience and the things that come with the diagnosis.
And he instantly felt relief.
He just could tell that it was like a piece of the puzzle coming together.
