And funnily enough, it actually looks like a little duck with its wings up behind its back.
Um, in plants there tends to be a lot of mimicry.
A lot of plants will try and mimic their pollinators.
They might try and mimic the body parts of a wasp or a gnat or something along those lines.
But I can confidently say that this particular orchid species was never pollinated by a duck.
The flying duck orchid, which is Calliana Major, that can be found in all parts of southeastern Australia.
You can find it in a variety of different habitat types.
It's a small orchid and it's a reddish-brown colour when it's in flower, so it's very difficult to spot.

The head that you see on a duck orchid is actually a part of the what's known as a labellum.
So when the labellum is touched, it will trigger this mechanism so that the pollinator will be quite literally thrown back into a position on the flower where the pollen is.

Sometimes I have to wait for that mechanism to sort of reset, but then the pollinator can then move on and will get tricked into, through pheromones, into pollinating another plant somewhere else.
