So it's quite a complex system.

Look, the processes of propagation have changed.

definitely improved over the course of the last 10 to 20 years.

And we are definitely leading the way in terms of the success of propagation and planting and reintroduction back into the wild.

Absolutely.

Back in 2019...

I decided to construct my own orchid conservation facility here in Bendigo, where I have a laboratory.

So all of the propagation that I do is done in sterile conditions.

And I also have my own little nursery where I house, I can house up to four and a half thousand endangered orchids at any given time.

Now I have to ask,

Look, I have cameras and I have very big dogs.

Yeah.

Look, I have had instances where I have done orchid reintroductions back into the wild or have discovered new populations of very rare orchids.

And some silly people have come and dug them out thinking that they can keep them in their own collection.

Now, they're such a complicated species.

plant to keep they're not you know it's not just like a I'm going to say it's not just like another native plant shrub that you can just plant in your garden and it'll survive and be successful they're very finicky and they do take a lot of care and attention and chances are anybody who does dig them up out of the wild unless they're an expert orchid grower they're not going to be able to keep them alive anyway so it's a real shame when they do go missing from the wild.

But look, I do, I understand completely why people want to see these things.

I actually, one of the things I'm proud of is that I have never seen my favourite orchid.

It's called an elbow orchid and it's a really intriguing thing.

I've only ever seen photos and pictures of it, even though I have GPS coordinates on them.
