WSJ Your Money Briefing · Why Appealing Your Insurance-Claim Denial Could Pay Off · 13 Feb 2025
podcast
What I found is that the people who were successful, especially in these more complicated situations, left no stone unturned.
They presented evidence that the insurance company had already spent X number of dollars getting the patient to the point that they were well enough to receive, for instance, a liver transplant.
And why deny the liver transplant?
They presented recent evidence, scientific studies showing that these treatments were efficacious.
They had letters from their doctors.
A mother that I spoke to whose daughter was suffering from a debilitating illness that was affecting her ability to really be in school showed how her daughter's handwriting was
had actually gotten worse because of the lack of treatment over time.
Anything that you would do to try to convince this person if you were in front of them, these people did.
And then they also copied the attorney general, the regulator, the CEO of the company, journalists, just anything.
It doesn't mean that is necessary for every single appeal, but
As you can see, it can get pretty progressively complicated and onerous.
