I met him at the station.
He came in late at night.
I'd laid our table with all our best wedding presents and everything, all the silver and the glass and everything, and my rations, such as they were.
I remember a dish with a little bit of butter in it, you see.
And when he arrived, he was absolutely bushed, of course, he was so tired.
And he said, ''Oh, what a miserable bit of butter.''
I said, that's my whole week's ration.
He had no idea what rationing was.
Yes, it was difficult, especially for him, because he'd gone into the army before he'd finished his degree course, and originally he was supposed to go back and finish it, but of course he didn't want to do that.
He was 26, he was a major, by which time, of course, I was a very busy radio actress, doing very well.
So it was difficult for him to adjust.
But we'd always been good friends, apart from anything else.
So we got on well together.
