Canada will be implementing 25% tariffs against $155 billion worth of American goods.
Well, that is totally false. Far less than 1% of fentanyl flows and less than 1% of illegal crossings into the United States comes from Canada.
I think, first of all, it's important every chance we get to lay out the facts as clearly as possible. In 2014, Russia chose to invade Ukraine, to occupy Crimea and parts of eastern Ukraine. For that, they were kicked out of the G7, And in 2022, they chose to violate the existing ceasefire and invaded Ukraine with the intention of taking Kyiv in three days and the entire country in three weeks.
That has failed. Russia continues to try to fight to claim more land in Ukraine. And we could see an end to this war tomorrow if Russia decided to stop its illegal invasion of Ukraine. On Friday in the Oval Office, President Zelensky pointed out in so many words that Vladimir Putin is a liar.
and a criminal and cannot be trusted to keep his word in any way, shape or form because he has demonstrated time and time again that he will break any agreements. I stand with Vladimir Zelensky. And I stand with the people of Ukraine.
Canada has been one of the strongest countries in support of Ukraine from the very beginning, for over 10 years now. We've been training Ukrainian Defence Forces. We're up to close to 40,000 Ukrainian troops that we have trained over the years. We're continuing to play a significant role in training, as is the UK, who is our primary partner in that.
We've also invested close to $20 billion in supports for Ukraine, military, economic, and other. And we're going to continue to be there to support Ukraine as necessary with whatever it takes for as long as it takes, because Ukraine is not just defending its own territories, defending the very principles and values that underpin all of our democracies.
So as we look at what's going to be necessary in the coming years, I can assure you that Canada and Canadians will be there.
We can do everything necessary to avoid these tariffs coming in, but like I said, if on Tuesday there are unjustified tariffs brought in on Canada, we will have an immediate and extremely strong response, as Canadians expect.
The first thing on tariffs is to emphasize that our government, and indeed all of Team Canada, premiers, business leaders, community leaders, are focused on one thing, making sure that come Tuesday and for the weeks that follow, there are no tariffs imposed on Canada.
The tariffs that the President speaks of for next week are centered around the fentanyl crisis that they're facing in the United States, but that we are also facing in Canada. And for months now, I've been emphasizing that less than 1% of the fentanyl that arrives in the United States comes from Canada.
But we know that even that 1% or less than 1% should be reduced, which is why we've invested $1.3 billion in strengthening our border capacities with Black Hawk helicopters, with drones, with 10,000 people patrolling our borders and keeping Canadians and Americans safe.
And we will continue, as we are this week, with ministers and heads of agencies, including the commissioner of the RCMP, the head of the CBSA, and our fentanyl czar down in Washington to demonstrate that this is an issue that we should be working together on. and that Canada is not the source of problems for the United States.
We will continue to do that work and do everything necessary to avoid these tariffs coming in. But like I said, if on Tuesday there are unjustified tariffs brought in on Canada, we will have an immediate and extremely strong response, as Canadians expect.
Ukrainians have been fighting and dying not just to protect their sovereignty, their territorial integrity, they're also fighting to protect the rules-based order that keeps us all safe around the world and has for close to 80 years now. This period of peace, stability, prosperity for the world happens because we had rules around borders,
around not invading your neighbors that Russia chose deliberately to violate a number of years ago. That is why Canada and our allies are unequivocal on standing up against Vladimir Putin's illegal, immoral, unjust violations of the international order.
and why I'm looking forward to sitting down with my European partners in a couple of hours to talk about how we will continue to stand unequivocally in defense of Ukraine, but also in defense of the rules that keep us all safe.
