And what we're doing, we'll use words like love and commitment, but what we're really doing is we're thinking about costs and benefits.
There's another step you can go here, which is, in fact, there's nothing wrong with saying that marriage is largely about love.
That's a benefit.
We can model that.
We can put that inside our models and use that to help understand what
which couples are going to get married and how stable their relationships are going to be.
There are things that are important to people.
That's terrific.
Let's recognise them, but understand that economics can have something to say about them.
You can get many of the benefits of marriage just by moving in together.
Maybe what Mark really wants is commitment.
Well, marriage doesn't really give you commitment because you can always get divorced.
If that's the case, maybe Mark and his girlfriend should be thinking about getting tattoos.
The way lots of relationships work is very much an insurance policy.
If, Mark, you lose your job, don't worry, your partner will also still be earning an income and hopefully she'll still share that with you.
Now, there is a question, do you need to get married to get that insurance?
