For as long as I'd been working on this project, I'd been trying to come to terms with what it all meant.
Quinetta told me that the only way prisoners in solitary can experience touch is in the exercise cages.
There are a couple pens next to each other, and sometimes you get an hour to move around in them, alone.
If you climb about 20 feet up, there, at the top, there's a little gap in the fencing.
If you balance precariously and someone else in the next cage does the exact same thing, then you can press your fingertips to another person's.
But, Quinet added, that's for the younger prisoners.
She wasn't climbing anywhere.
So, no physical touch.
