But before we talk about that, let's get to know Cindy just a little bit more.

So Cindy was born Hyun Jong Song in Seoul, South Korea, in February of 1980.

She had one brother, Kiho Song, who was five years older than her.

And growing up, Cindy was described as being precocious, sharp, and curious.

Her mom, Ban Soon Song, said, quote,

Even from a young age, she would study American culture and she was really fascinated by America.

And her dream was actually to live there one day.

And then in 1995, her parents told her that she was going to get the chance not just to visit, but to actually move here for good.

They hoped that it would lead to a better education for Cindy.

There was just one catch to all of this, and that's that Cindy was going to have to go alone.

Her parents and her brother were not going to come.

Instead, she was going to live with her aunt and uncle in Springfield, Virginia.

You know, a lot of teens would be terrified by this prospect, but this was Cindy's dream.

So that year, at just 15 years old, she moved to the United States by herself, which I can't imagine doing at just 15.

And not only that, but Cindy had never been here before and she didn't even speak English.

But if anyone could make the most of a big, scary change, it was going to be her.

She was very independent.

She's also a free spirit.

And above all else, she was incredibly driven.
