This story features a bunch of gold miners in a cave in Laos.
So in May of 2026, the same month that the Maldives disaster happened, a group of gold miners walked into an unmapped cave in central Laos.
They were artisanal prospectors, and part of this surge that's been happening in small-scale mining driven by record gold prices.
Now, the cave that they were in was hours from the nearest city on muddy monsoon season.
