Andrew Welsh, Ted Richards, the footy director, the CEO, Tim Roberts, they'll all speak in the next few days to determine exactly what this process is to appoint a new coach.

They'll first work to determine the characteristics they want in a new coach.

And then they'll have...

A short list.

The list could be very short.

The list could be one or two names.

It might be three or four names.

I don't think it's going to be an exhaustive 10 or 15 names that they then whittle down.

I'm still looking at Mark McVay at the Sydney Swans as someone that they'll speak to at some stage, whether it's to be their senior coach or whether it's to come in to support whoever the senior coach is.

But this will start to move a little bit quicker now.

And those conversations happen over the weekend and they'll happen early this week as well.

But if there is a selection dilemma between a player that might not be there next year and a player that will be there next year, you can look further ahead.

What do you do if you're Carlton?

That's the question that they'll be asking themselves now.

So that's all happening in the next couple of weeks.

But I just can't shake this feeling that they might make a play for a senior coach who's already at an AFL club.

A Sam Mitchell type, a Chris Scott type, maybe even Justin Longmuir.

I think that's less likely.

I just can't shake this feeling that they might be bold and just have a wild swing at one of these guys, Cain.

I'm not sure Brendan Gale directly has, but they've certainly reached out to a lot of those guys to ascertain whether there'd be any interest and also their contractual situation.
