Those payments are set to expire after Labor Day.
We only have a few more months of them.
So I don't think it's likely that Congress is going to do anything.
But what we have seen in recent weeks is states, you know, governors, mostly Republican governors announcing, look, we're going to end this early.
They appear to have the ability to do that.
They have that discretion.
The Biden administration hasn't really challenged them on this, although some Democrats have urged them to.
But basically for a number of people in those states in the next few weeks, those extra payments will be ending.
So the research has suggested, if we look at the beginning of the pandemic, there was some research looking at these initial payments, which, as I mentioned, were much bigger.
They were $600.
And back then, the research found that they weren't really a major factor in keeping people out of work.
In other words, if we think about what was happening, say, in April and May and even in June, businesses were shut down.
I mean, many people were out of work because the place they worked had closed.
Also, the government wanted people to stay home.
That's part of the reason they made these benefits so generous.
They didn't want people spreading the virus.
They wanted businesses, you know, and in some cases ordered businesses to close.
So that was one reason, one argument for making these very generous.
The flip side of that now, what Republicans are saying is, look, the economy is really doing well.
