I really liked the way that he
draws them and draws them quickly.
Although it did make me want to read more by Carol Phillips.
And he's written a lot of plays and he's written a lot about the Afro-Caribbean experience therein.
Whereas back in St Kitts, he also evokes this world where everything stops and all the men listen to the BBC news.
And there's this sense of this connection to an old version of empire that is both sort of interesting and there's a real eyebrow raised at it at the same time.
And of course, one of the strange things that happens every week on a program like The Bookshelf is that I end up thinking about these piles of books
in relation to each other, because I've sort of jammed them together.
And so here we have this, we meet a lot, I think, of young people full of potential that can't be realised.
And that's what we were seeing in Susan Choi's book, Flashlight, as well, is these young, clever people who end up having to be sort of autodidacts.
And I thought that was a really interesting connection between these books as well.
And I love that sort of texture of everyday lives.
But the other thing that I think all of these books that we've talked about have done
is have secrets at the heart of them.
Because although, you know, this is all about words and wordiness, one of the things that's always fascinating is what's unsaid and what's not spelled out and not knowing that that character is your twin.
Or that, you know, characters in this book have children that nobody knows about in the same way that in Flashlight there were hidden children, entire families excised from people's narratives.
I mean, Victor has a son who we don't even really know about for a good chunk of the... And a wife.
And a wife.
And his new partner wasn't aware that she existed either.
And that's Carol Phillips' Another Man in the Street, which is published by Bloomsbury.
