Bren's brother, Travis, says, hey, have you seen these YouTube images of people turning into trees?
Hilarious and then grim as well because he keeps on being given this work and he doesn't know what it is or what it's for and it's meaningless and it's so funny you could cry.
One of the clever things about this novel is the way that that idea creeps up on us.
So there are some little references to it with Bren's brother, Travis, at the very beginning.
And then these people come more and more into focus.
And they're people who are standing still and turning their faces up to the sun.
And the questions at the beginning are, is this performance art?
Is this a cult?
What's going on with these people?
What's going on with this stillness?
And Kaylin's take on it is, again, very fresh.
I mean, she's looking around to see a leader.
She wonders whether it's a cult.
And so she has these really active questions, doesn't she?
I love the fact that he didn't make it a sort of easy, ethereal, you know, elvish kind of transformation, that it is something that is difficult and painful and requires people to help and give you water and, you know, to be sort of quasi gardeners.
And so it's not an easy transformation.
transformation and it's not an easy way out or copping out of society.
But also sometimes it's happening in little groves with support and other times it's happening, you know, in the middle of a suburb or in the middle of a street or somewhere that it means that the
police and local council are starting to be bothered by these trees getting in the way.
It's not an easy fairy tale transformation.
