So there's this narrator who we're sometimes inside a voice in this book and we're sometimes in this sort of close third person and she's picking up a single splinter of stained glass, bright as a ruby, warm as blood.
The vapours that had risen from warm bodies in the pews would have carried syllables mixed with candles distilled as condensation on the chapel windows.
So we're embedded in this landscape and then we're in the landscape of history and of archives.
Now, I should say, Bernadette, that you and I have both spent time in archives.
We've both done historical research, so we know how thrilling it is.
But this is a revelation to her, isn't it?

But also it's the thrill of this idea of the stories, the lives, the detail that you find in archival research.
When she first enters, this is I think only on page 12 of this novel, she opens the oldest casebook in the archives collection.
You have to undo the binding, the ribbon.
She found it extraordinarily beautiful with its disheveled bindings and delicate ruined spine.
And I thought, what a beautiful description of something that when you do archival research becomes ordinary.
You undo these things, you have to very carefully turn the pages.
And what a world you're opening up.
What a world.
And there's another layer that I resisted at first, and it's a layer that's there in the description of this book.
It's in the way that publishers and it feels like other people talk about it, which is the idea of being haunted by the characters you find.
