Yes.
I mean, the way that the narrator in Deborah Levy's novel explains it is that she was an enormous woman when women were supposed to be miniature.
She was bold and outspoken and egotistical when women weren't supposed to be like that.
And so the whole book is playing around with that.
and storytelling, and for me it was an absolute pleasure to read, although I'll confess it did make me want to go off and read her famous memoir, which is called The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas.
Who is a saint, by the way, Alice B. Toklas, a saint.
Who was Gertrude Stein's life partner, who sort of looked after her.
And made her career, made her literary career after she died, but go on.
And so all of that actually made me more interested in,
in the history and the reputation and probably in some ways less interested in the conceit around it, although Deborah Levy is such a terrific writer that I went with it.
But what about you, BJ?
Does this make you want to read a book that's sort of about Gertrude Stein and sort of isn't and is sort of about a woman and a missing cat in Paris and sort of isn't?
No.
Spare me, spare me.
Or not.
Or not.
Well, she obviously inspires people to play literary games, which means this book, as we like to say here on the bookshelf, won't be for everyone.
And it's partly about failing to write an essay.
It's about being with friends.
It's about various small dramas.
