It was a story about change and transformation and
as well as anxiety.
And I remember it was full of semi-precious stones.
Probably not Beryl.
I think that's a semi-precious stone name that's gone out of fashion.
Call out to my own Auntie Beryl there, of course.
I only barrel.
But it takes us a while to find out about her working life and it's a bit hard to, well, I found it a bit hard to ground her as a character at the beginning because what we hear about is that she's got very cool hair with a particular, you know, fringe and side parting and she lives in a sort of
cool inner city Melbourne where she meets up with her friends and they go to the right cafes and lives in this sort of funky little house.
Yes, and I agree with that take on her as well.
But we sort of see it with things like them meeting up with another couple.
And she can't quite relax into the experience.
It's almost adversarial.
It's almost like she's got an arch relationship to these other women.
And she says something like...
She wished she wasn't insecure by seeing other people's happy relationship, and yet she is.
So we're sort of even not quite sure about the status of her relationship with the adoring Ernesto slash Ernie.
Well, the other thing that we learn about her, actually on the first page of the novel, is that she's having an affair.
And so this sense that she is caught up in secrets and that this is very important to her.
At another point, very early on, she's listening to a podcast about secrets and she reflects it had been scary to hear herself spoken about by people who didn't even know she would be listening.
