On December the 10th, Dr. Foltz first reported his findings to NervTag, which all too many people now know stands for the New and Emerging Respiratory Virus Threats Advisory Group.
Nine days later, on December the 19th, Boris Johnson was using the stat in a press conference.
Yes, there has been a lot more data available to analyse since Dr Valtz's first estimates.
Dr Rosie Barnard is a research fellow in infectious disease modelling at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.
She co-authored a different report into the spread of the new variant.
We can see that the proportion of the new variant is growing in time.
Then we started to look at different explanations behind why that might be happening.
And the best mechanism that we found fitting the data was...
increased transmissibility of the new variant.
Those estimates we found between 50 and 74% increased transmissibility.
Yes, that's true.
Although ironically, if it had been 70% more deadly rather than transmissible, it might have been a less worrying variant.
Explain.
So imagine a virus with an R number of one.
So each person who's infected infects one more person.
Let's say that you start with 10 cases and each week you get 10 new cases.
Now, instead, imagine the variant that's 70% more infectious.
So R is 1.7.
In the second week, you get 17 new cases.
In the third week, there's 29.
