The frog orchid.
These are bee orchids and they really do resemble a bee.
That's pretty unusual.
When somebody glances at a bit of grass in the suburbs, they'd be expecting a lawn full of ryegrass or maybe a football field and just mow it down busily once a month.
If you let it grow and if it has never been interfered with, you might get some surprises when the seed bank is allowed to do its thing.
The burnet moths are a great example of how plants and insects are kind of interwoven in their life cycles.
The burnet moth, the food plant of its caterpillars is the bird's foot trephile, which is a sort of carpeting plant.
You see lots of it hanging over curbs as you drive along the motorway.
It loves lime and good drainage.
It's a member of the clover family.
So one of the things it does is brings nitrogen down into this soil so we don't need to fertilise it.
We shouldn't.
I'm just looking at something there but they're actually going to lots of other plants as well including the orchids.
We've had a hatch recently of burnet moths and they're flying all around us like little spinning tops.
They're feeding on the
Pyramidal orchids, they're feeding on the ragwort.
Here's one feeding on the knapweed.
And then there's enough birds for trephile for them to lay eggs on.
We actually saw a pair mating last week, so we hope they'll have a family.
And the cycle will repeat.
