I think we don't understand the role that schools can play in ensuring that multiculturalism succeeds.
And...
I think it can succeed and it does succeed in places and in other places it doesn't succeed and I think in part that's because we don't pay enough attention to our schools.
For instance, Kayla, we make multiculturalism one of our ambitions to make sure that it succeeds so the children are friends with each other across various religions and different races and so on.
As an example, we eat one meal together every day at lunch.
It's family lunch.
And so we serve each other and we clean up after each other.
We're teaching them the soft skills of what it is to dine together and eat your food and have a conversation at the same time and so on.
When we first started, we started with meat.
And we divided the children up according to what they ate.
Some ate meat without pork.
Some ate meat without beef.
Some were vegetarian, a variety.
And when we divided them all up, I looked at the whole and I thought, well, we're dividing them according to race and religion here.
And I'm not doing that.
Not on my watch.
So we decided to go vegetarian.
And it means that we can break bread together and it doesn't matter where our families are from.
We can share in a meal and we all make that sacrifice.
And really, it's about children understanding the idea that you sacrifice things that might be important to you for the betterment of the whole.
