Because we're recording this on Monday evening and it's just broken in the last hour or so that Lionel Messi has retired from international football.

And obviously on this podcast we mainly talk about women's football, but it would seem remiss of us not to mention the fact that he has retired.

one of the iconic players, I think we all kind of knew coming to the World Cup that that was possibly the last time we were gonna see him on a major international stage.

And I think the passing of his father as well, who ha was such an influence on his career in the last couple of weeks, probably put a stamp on now is the right time to to end things.

Really enjoyed watching him during the World Cup, especially with all the question marks that were around him competing, going into it.

Um and you can tell by his statement that, you know, it's a decision that's right for him, but one that still it it hurts because obviously when you've given that much to your country and you become the iconic figure of your country, then it's always going to it's always going to be a difficult one.

And it is interesting that this isn't the first time he's retired.

Like he first retired in twenty sixteen after a COPA final where he missed a penalty, came back in twenty eighteen and then kept going for what's that, another eight years.
